The Northern Sporades are filled with hidden gems, and Alonissos is definitely an island worth discovering. During our vacation in Skopelos, we decided to dedicate a full day to exploring this neighboring island through a memorable boat trip.
🚢 The Journey from Skopelos
The experience began from Skopelos, where we boarded a day-cruise boat heading towards Alonissos. Right from the start, the voyage across the Aegean Sea was mesmerizing, with deep blue waters and lush green landscapes setting a picture-perfect backdrop.
🏊♂️ Swimming in Crystal Waters
Throughout the trip, we made several swim stops. The sea around Alonissos truly amazed us with its clarity and vibrant shades, proving why it’s considered one of Greece’s finest destinations for sea lovers.
One of the highlights was Votsi Cave, a striking natural cave formation surrounded by signature Sporades turquoise waters. Stopping there was pure magic—a spot where raw nature meets tranquility.
Next, we visited Leftos Gialos, one of Alonissos' most popular beaches. Its pebble-and-sand coastline alongside transparent waters offers the ultimate setting for seaside relaxation.
🏘️ Exploring Island Alleys
After our sea exploration, we took time to wander through the charming streets of Alonissos and experience its authentic vibe.
Traditional alleyways, serene atmosphere, and genuine island charm make time feel like it slows down here. We wrapped up our stroll at a local traditional tavern, tasting delicious local dishes in a beautiful setting.
The best moment, however, was the view from above. Gazing out over the endless blue of the Aegean Sea and neighboring islets, you realize why Alonissos holds a special place among Greek island destinations.
🦭 Searching for Seals & Dolphins
One of the special highlights of our cruise was trying to spot the Mediterranean Monk Seal (Monachus Monachus), one of the rarest creatures inhabiting these waters.
Our boat headed towards the core zone of the National Marine Park of Alonissos. Although the seal didn't make an appearance, cruising through these protected waters was a fantastic experience on its own.
And as travel often goes, the best moments are unplanned! 🐬 A bit later, we were greeted by a pod of playful dolphins that swam right alongside our boat for a while.
Watching dolphins glide through the Aegean blue became one of those unforgettable highlights that stay with you forever.

A day cruise to Alonissos was definitely one of the best choices of our Sporades trip. In just one day, we experienced crystal waters, lush landscapes, traditional charm, and pure tranquility.
