Sea • History • Flavors • Summer Escapes
Aegina is one of the easiest and most beloved destinations for a short getaway from Athens. In just a little over an hour from Piraeus, you find yourself on an island that combines beautiful beaches, history, gastronomy, and a unique religious destination.
A few days ago, we decided to spend a summer three-day weekend in Aegina, and the experience exceeded every expectation.
The Journey from Piraeus
We departed from the port of Piraeus by ferry, paying approximately 70€ in total for two people and a car (round trip). The journey took a little over an hour, and shortly after 10:00 in the morning, we set foot on the island.
Our accommodation was located in Agia Marina, a peaceful area that makes an excellent base both for relaxation and for excursions across the entire island.
First Acquaintance with Aegina Town (Chora)
Before heading to the hotel, we started our exploration from Chora. We walked through its narrow streets, enjoying the relaxed atmosphere of the port. One of the first things that impressed us was the characteristic fishing boats, which every morning turn into small floating grocer shops, full of fresh fruits and vegetables.
Of course, we stocked up on the famous Aegina pistachios and local products, enjoying our coffee right next to the sea.
Visit to Saint Nektarios Monastery
Our next stop was the Monastery of Saint Nektarios, one of the most important pilgrimage destinations in Greece. We experienced a deeply devout atmosphere at the tomb of the Saint and tasted the traditional loukoumi (lokoum).
Exploring Marathonas and Perdika
The second day was dedicated to the beaches and the southwestern part of the island.
En route to Perdika, we made our first stop at a small beach just before Marathonas. To get there, one needs to walk down some small rocks, but the scenery and the crystal-clear waters reward every step.
The next stop was Aeginitissa Beach, one of the most beautiful beaches in Aegina, featuring pristine waters and ideal for a refreshing swim.
The final destination of the day was the picturesque Perdika. We wandered around the small port, enjoyed fresh food by the sea, and of course, did not miss the opportunity for yet another swim in the area's wonderful waters.
A Magical Evening at the Aegina Jazz Festival
After a bit of rest in the room, the evening had another beautiful experience in store for us.
We found ourselves at the Aegina Jazz Festival, held in a unique venue within Aegina's former prison grounds, inside a historic traditional building. The music, the atmosphere, and the setting created the ideal finale for our Saturday night.
Flavors of Aegina: An Authentic Gastronomic Experience
A trip to Aegina could not be complete without experiencing the traditional flavors of the island.
During our visit to the picturesque Perdika, we enjoyed a wonderful meal at a traditional fish tavern by the sea, where the lovely atmosphere combined ideally with local tastes.
We tasted traditional tiganosoupa (fried fish soup), a special dish of Aegina, as well as squid cooked in the traditional Aeginian style and fresh octopus, all prepared with simple ingredients and respect for local cuisine.
Every dish brought us closer to the island's gastronomic tradition and Aegina's connection to the sea. The authentic flavors, fresh ingredients, and view of the picturesque port of Perdika created an experience we will remember.
For us, this meal was not just a food stop, but yet another lovely moment of our trip to Aegina, full of flavors, images, and the authentic Greek hospitality that makes every island special.
The Last Day in Aegina
Sunday arrived quickly.
After packing our luggage and checking out of our room, we returned to Chora for a final coffee by the port.
We visited the archaeological site of Kolona, one of the island's most important historical spots, and before boarding the ferry, we managed to fit in one last refreshing swim in the sea.
A little later, we took the road back, full of wonderful images, flavors, and experiences.
Is Aegina Ultimately Worth It?
The answer is clear: yes.
Aegina is a destination that uniquely manages to combine natural beauty, history, tradition, and gastronomy. In just a few days, one can wander through the picturesque alleys of Chora, visit the imposing Monastery of Saint Nektarios, relax on beautiful beaches, discover authentic flavors like traditional tiganosoupa, and live unique experiences, ranging from a summer swim to a music-filled evening.
For us, this three-day trip was much more than a short getaway. It was a journey full of wonderful images, authentic moments, and small experiences that ultimately make every destination special.
If you are looking for a nearby island destination that combines relaxation, culture, sea, and authentic Greek hospitality, then Aegina definitely deserves a spot on your next travel list.
