Budapest

Built on both banks of the Danube, the Hungarian capital is essentially divided into two different worlds: Buda, with its hills, Castle, and picturesque lanes, and Pest, with its grand boulevards, impressive buildings, markets, restaurants, and vibrant nightlife.

Whether you are traveling for a short city break or want to explore the city at a more relaxed pace, Budapest has everything you need for a trip you will remember.

How to Get to Budapest?

Budapest is one of the most accessible destinations in Central Europe and is an ideal choice even for a short city break.

✈️ By Air

Ferenc Liszt International Airport serves a large number of flights from European cities, with several options from low-cost airlines as well.

We chose to travel from Thessaloniki to Budapest with Wizz Air, an option that worked particularly well for a budget trip.

💰 Flight cost: approximately €70 per person, round trip.

From Budapest Airport, you can reach the city center by public transport, bus, or taxi, depending on your budget and the level of comfort you prefer.

🏨 Where We Stayed

For our stay, we chose Hotel Erzsébet City Center Budapest, a member of Radisson Individuals, a very convenient option for exploring the city.

The hotel is centrally located in Budapest, which gave us easy access to many attractions, restaurants, and points of interest.

💰 Accommodation cost: €292 total for 4 nights.

For a 4-night trip, we felt the location-to-price ratio was quite good, especially since we wanted a central base for our daily explorations.

🚆 By Train

If you are already in Central Europe, the train is an excellent option. Budapest is connected by rail with major cities such as Vienna, Prague, Bratislava, and Zagreb.

🚗 By Road

Getting there by car or bus is also easy, thanks to the extensive road network and international bus connections.

💸 Our Budget for Transportation & Accommodation

To give you a clearer picture of the costs, on our trip:

🏛️ What to See in Budapest

The list of attractions in the city is long. However, there are some places that should not be missed on any trip.

🏰 1. Buda Castle

Buda Castle rises above the Danube and is one of the city's most important historic landmarks.

The area around the Castle is ideal for walking. The cobblestone lanes, historic buildings, and views over Pest create an atmosphere that takes you back to another era.

And of course, set aside some time to enjoy the views of Parliament and the Danube.

💡 TravelTagged tip: Don't visit the Castle only for the building itself. The real experience is wandering through the entire area.

🌉 2. Chain Bridge

The Chain Bridge is one of the symbols of Budapest.

The historic bridge connects Buda with Pest and is one of the best places to enjoy the Danube.

The best part? Visit it twice — once just before sunset and once after dark. At night, when the bridge and surrounding buildings are illuminated, the view is truly magical.

⛪ 3. St. Stephen's Basilica

St. Stephen's Basilica is one of the most impressive buildings in Budapest.

Its interior is particularly impressive, but what is most worthwhile is the opportunity to go up high and enjoy the panoramic view of the city.

🛍️ 4. Great Market Hall

Want to experience Budapest through its flavors? Then the Great Market Hall is a stop worth making.

At its stalls you will find traditional products, spices, paprika, cured meats, sweets, and plenty of souvenirs. It is also a great place to get a glimpse of everyday local life.

♨️ 5. Széchenyi Thermal Bath

You can't visit Budapest without experiencing its famous thermal baths.

Széchenyi Thermal Bath is perhaps the city's most famous bath, with impressive outdoor and indoor pools. The experience is especially unique during the colder months, when you are in warm water while the air around you is freezing.

🩱 Don't forget: a swimsuit, towel, and flip-flops.

Ticket prices and available facilities change, so it is a good idea to check the official pricing policy before your visit.

🗿 6. Heroes' Square

Heroes' Square is one of Budapest's best-known squares and features monuments dedicated to important figures in Hungarian history.

It is located next to City Park, so you can easily combine your visit with a walk in the park and a visit to the Széchenyi Baths.

🌳 7. Andrássy Avenue

Andrássy Avenue is one of the city's most distinctive streets. Here you will find historic buildings, shops, cafés, and cultural attractions. It is worth walking along it at a leisurely pace and enjoying its architecture.

🏛️ 8. Hungarian Parliament Building

If there is one building you will remember from Budapest, it is the Hungarian Parliament Building.

Built on the banks of the Danube, it is one of the most recognizable buildings in Europe. The best view is from the opposite side of the river, especially after dark when Parliament is illuminated.

🏰 9. Fisherman's Bastion

Fisherman's Bastion is perhaps the most photogenic spot in Budapest. Its towers and white walls resemble a fairytale castle, while the views of Parliament and the Danube are stunning.

👞 10. Shoes on the Danube

On the banks of the Danube stands one of the city's most moving memorials. Shoes on the Danube honors the Jews who were murdered at this site during World War II.

The metal shoes along the riverbank serve as a simple yet powerful symbol of remembrance.

If you want to escape the bustle and crowds of the city center for a while, Margaret Island is an excellent choice.

Margaret Island, Budapest
Margaret Island

The lush island lies in the middle of the Danube, between Buda and Pest, and is one of the most popular places for relaxation among locals and visitors.

Bicycles on Margaret Island

Here you can take a pleasant walk among trees and gardens, rent a bicycle or one of the small vehicles used to explore the island, and simply enjoy a few hours away from the city's fast pace.

🌿 What is worth seeing on the island:

  • 🌸 The beautiful gardens and parks
  • ⛲ The Musical Fountain, especially beautiful when it operates with music
  • 🏛️ The historic ruins and old monastery
  • 🌳 The Japanese Garden
  • 🚲 The bike paths and routes through the park

Margaret Island is ideal for a more relaxed afternoon, especially after several hours of walking around Budapest's attractions.

⏰ Allow several hours for your visit, as the area is large and there are many animals and places worth exploring. If you want to enjoy it without rushing, it is better to dedicate a significant part of the day.

🚤 A Danube Cruise Is a Must

If there is one experience I would highly recommend, it is a Danube cruise.

From the water, you see Budapest from a completely different perspective. Parliament, Buda Castle, the bridges, and the illuminated buildings create a scene that feels especially cinematic at night.

🍴 What to Eat in Budapest

A trip to Budapest does not end with the sights. Hungarian cuisine is rich, hearty, and full of bold flavors.

Gulyás

The famous goulash is one of Hungary's signature dishes. It is more of a rich soup with meat, vegetables, and paprika than the classic stew often found outside Hungary.

Pörkölt

Thicker and more intense than gulyás, pörkölt is one of the classic dishes of Hungarian cuisine.

Lángos

Lángos is one of the street foods you absolutely have to try. Fried dough, usually topped with garlic, sour cream, and cheese. Simple, affordable, and delicious.

Kürtőskalács

The famous chimney cake is one of the most popular sweets you will find on the streets of Budapest. Crispy on the outside, soft on the inside, and usually coated with sugar, cinnamon, or other flavors.

🌮 Street Food Karavan: For Affordable and Delicious Food

If you want to try different flavors without spending much, add Street Food Karavan on Kazinczy utca, near the Jewish Quarter, to your list.

The venue consists of various street-food stands and offers options for different tastes. From lángos and burgers to tacos, as well as vegetarian and vegan options, it is particularly suitable for groups.

The best part is that everyone can choose something different and you can all enjoy your food together in a relaxed, lively atmosphere.

How to Travel to Budapest on a Budget

Budapest can be a fairly budget-friendly destination, especially if you plan your expenses carefully.

🚇 1. Use Public Transportation

The metro, tram, and bus network is very useful for exploring the city. Before buying tickets or a pass, estimate how many trips you will make so you can choose the option that offers the best value.

🛏️ 2. Book Budget Accommodation

Hostels, budget hotels, and apartments can significantly reduce costs, especially if you book well in advance.

🌯 3. Eat Like a Local

Not every meal needs to be at a restaurant. Street food, small local eateries, and markets can offer authentic flavors at lower prices.

🚶 4. Walk as Much as You Can

Much of Budapest's beauty is found in its streets. Walk along the Danube, cross the bridges, and explore the neighborhoods without a specific destination. Sometimes, the best discoveries are the ones that are not on the map.

🆓 5. Discover the Free Attractions

You do not need a ticket to enjoy many of the city's most iconic spots, such as Chain Bridge, Heroes' Square, and Shoes on the Danube.

🎟️ 6. Is the Budapest Card Worth It?

Depending on your itinerary, the Budapest Card may offer discounts or free access to various attractions, museums, and activities. Before buying it, compare its benefits with the places and activities you actually plan to visit.

❤️ Budapest Is Waiting for You

Budapest is one of those cities that is difficult to fit into a single trip.

One moment you are walking among historic buildings and castles, the next you are relaxing in a thermal bath, and a little later you are enjoying a lángos beside the Danube.

And when night falls, the lights of Parliament, the bridges, and the historic buildings create a scene that makes the city feel even more special.

If you are looking for a European destination that combines history, beauty, gastronomy, and entertainment without necessarily requiring a huge budget, Budapest definitely deserves a place on your list.
