Discovering the Diamonds of the Neretva
Konjic, the Jablanica canyon and legendary Mostar — a route along the river that unites East and West.
Bosnia and Herzegovina is a country that promises to captivate you from the very first moment. Amid wild mountains, dense forests and crystal-clear rivers lies a rich history that unites East and West. On this trip, we followed the course of the Neretva river and discovered some of the most picturesque landscapes in the Balkans.
Konjic: The Gateway to Herzegovina
Our first stop was the picturesque Konjic, a historic town built on the banks of the Neretva river. The town's landmark is the famous Stara Ćuprija (Old Stone Bridge), an architectural masterpiece from the Ottoman period built in the late 17th century.
Walking along the cobblestone streets of the old town, you feel time come to a standstill. The tranquility of the landscape, with the turquoise waters of the river mirroring the lush green mountains around it, makes Konjic an ideal destination for relaxation and photography.
The magic of the Neretva canyon & Lake Jablaničko
Leaving Konjic and heading south, the route turns into a visual feast. The road cuts through the imposing Neretva canyon, where steep rocky cliffs rise above emerald waters.
Around Jablanica, the river widens into the idyllic Jablaničko lake. The view from the mountain passes and from the balconies of the local restaurants is simply breathtaking — a landscape full of calm, flowers and natural beauty.
On the Konjic – Mostar route, stop at one of the riverside local restaurants to try the famous traditional spit-roasted lamb (Janjetina), a specialty of the Jablanica region!
Mostar: The City of Bridges and Cultures
Our final destination was legendary Mostar. This city is a living museum where Ottoman architecture meets European heritage.
The city's landmark is none other than the Stari Most (Old Bridge), the symbolic 16th-century arched bridge connecting the two banks of the city. From there, the view over the Neretva river and the traditional houses is simply enchanting.
In the narrow lanes of the old bazaar (Kujundžiluk), the air is filled with the scent of authentic Bosnian coffee. There you'll find handmade copper wares, oriental lanterns and souvenirs, while the tall minaret of the Koski Mehmed Pasha mosque towers over the skyline, offering the best panoramic view of the city.
