Hallstatt, Gosau and Gmunden: A Road Trip from Vienna to the Austrian Alps

Hallstatt

Hallstatt

We left Vienna without knowing whether we would have enough time to see everything.

We had rented a car for our Christmas holiday and decided to dedicate one day to leaving Vienna behind and heading towards the Austrian Alps.

We had three names on our itinerary:

Gmunden. Hallstatt. Gosau.

We had not counted on the little stops that would appear along the way, or on how different Austria would look as we moved farther away from the capital.

Lakes, mountains, wooden houses, snow-covered peaks and small villages began to follow one another.

And just like that, a day trip from Vienna turned into one of the most beautiful days of our journey.

🚗 From Vienna to the Austrian Alps

The car proved to be the best choice for our route. Not only because we wanted to visit three different places in the same day, but mainly because we did not want to be tied to a strict schedule. We wanted to be able to stop wherever we liked. And that is exactly what we did.

We set off early from Vienna and headed towards our first stop: Gmunden.

Gmunden

As time passed, the landscape changed. The city was left behind, and the first scenes we had come looking for began to appear ahead of us. Mountains, lakes, small Austrian villages and that feeling that the journey had only just begun.

Our first stop by Lake Traunsee

Gmunden was our first stop of the day, and perhaps it was exactly what we needed. We did not enter the town with the pressure of trying to see ten attractions. We left the car and simply walked. In front of us was Traunsee, with the Austrian Alps rising in the distance.

The scenery was peaceful, almost cinematic. We stopped for some food and coffee, walked along the lake and simply enjoyed the atmosphere for a while. If there was one thing we loved about Gmunden, it was precisely this sense of calm. It does not try to impress you. It simply lets you look.

📍 Traunkirchen: The stop that was not on the itinerary

Somewhere between Gmunden and Hallstatt, we decided to make a small detour. We arrived in Traunkirchen.

It was one of those spontaneous road-trip decisions that you ultimately remember more than the things you had planned. We walked up towards the spot with the little chapel and looked down at the lake.

Lake Traunsee was below us. The Alps surrounded us. And for a few minutes, there was no reason to hurry. It was also the first moment when we realized that this trip would be more than simply a “visit to Hallstatt.”

🏔️ Hallstatt: When a photograph is not enough

And then came Hallstatt. As we got closer, we already knew what we were going to see. We had seen it in photographs, travel articles and countless times on social media. And yet, when you see it in front of you, it is different. Perhaps because, for the first time, you are not looking at a photograph — you are inside it.

Hallstatt
Hallstatt

Hallstatt is built between the lake and the steep slopes of the Alps. The wooden houses, narrow streets and views of the lake create a setting that almost seems too beautiful to be real.

We arrived in the afternoon. And, without planning it, that was perhaps the best time. We walked through the narrow streets, browsed the little shops, bought a few souvenirs and, of course, took more photographs than we needed. Because in a place like Hallstatt, you always want to press the camera button one more time.

📸 What is worth seeing at Hallstatt

Lake Hallstätter See

The lake is essentially part of the village’s identity. Take some time simply to walk along the water and see Hallstatt from different angles. If the weather and season allow, there are also activities on the lake, such as boating.

The panoramic view

Hallstatt is even more impressive from above. There are options to climb to a higher elevation and enjoy panoramic views of the village and the lake.

The history of salt

Hallstatt is not just a beautiful village. The area has a history spanning thousands of years, closely connected with salt mining. The salt mines and related attractions offer a different side of the destination and are worth exploring, especially if you have more time than we did.

🐟 The trout that completed the day

At some point, it was time to eat. And because we were next to a huge Alpine lake, the choice was almost obvious: Grilled trout.

Simple, delicious and exactly what we needed after so many hours on the road. The food was good. But the real “flavour” was the setting.

🌲 Gosau: The quieter side of the route

From Hallstatt, we continued towards Gosau. Here, the atmosphere changes again.

If Hallstatt is the place you visit to admire, Gosau is the place where you want to stay a little longer.

Gosau
Gosau

The area is surrounded by mountains and is an excellent base for those who love nature, hiking and winter activities. We arrived at exactly the right moment, just before sunset. The mountain peak was covered in snow and reflected on the calm surface of the lake.

We stopped. We got out of the car. And we simply looked. There was nothing else we needed to do.

🏞️ What to do at Gosau

Hiking

The Dachstein region offers many options for those who love hiking and nature. In summer, the landscape is lush and green, while in winter it transforms into a snowy Alpine setting.

⛷️ Winter activities

During the winter months, the area is ideal for those who want to combine their trip with skiing and other snow activities.

🌲 The lake and the trails

If you are not a fan of intense activities, you do not need to do anything complicated. A walk in nature and some time by the lake are enough.

🚘 The road trip is ultimately the destination

When we left Gosau to return to Vienna, it was already dark. And that was when a different part of the trip began. The road passed through forests and small villages. Wooden houses. Smoking chimneys. Snow-covered landscapes.

We did not stop anywhere in particular. There was no attraction to see. We did not have a checklist to complete. And perhaps that is why it was one of the loveliest moments of the day.

🗺️ How to organize the route

If you would like to take this trip from Vienna too, our route was:

Vienna → Gmunden → Traunkirchen → Hallstatt → Gosau → Vienna

For us, the car was the best option because it allowed us to move freely and make stops without constantly watching the clock. If you do not want to drive, however, you can consider combinations of trains and buses or organized tours.

In any case, before organizing the route, check the actual timetables and opening hours of the attractions for the date you plan to travel.

And one piece of advice from us: do not try to squeeze too much in. This road trip needs time. It needs you to stop. To get out of the car. To look around. To have a coffee. To change the route a little if you see something you like. That is the whole point.

🤍 If we had to keep just one thing

Hallstatt is the star of the route. But for us, the journey was so much more. Gmunden, the unexpected stop in Traunkirchen, the trout by the lake, the snow-covered peak in Gosau and, above all, that return to Vienna through the illuminated Christmas villages.

If you take this route, do not see it as a list of destinations. See it as a road trip. Because in the end, what stays with you is not always the attraction. It is that moment when you stop in the middle of the Alps and simply say:

«Look at this…»

Leave room for little detours. Some of the most beautiful views of the journey may not even be on the map.
